Bed Wetting Five Year Olds – What You Can Do

Left unresolved, the problems of five year old children bed wetting can lead to such problems as low self esteem and the fear of otherwise normal childhood activities such as sleep overs or any other social situation where the child will sleep away from their own bed, such as school camps. Unfortunately, bed wetting is not an easy problem to solve, and requires a great deal of patience and time from both the child and the parent to avoid a long lasting problem.

The first thing to do with a bed wetting child is to take them to their family doctor to rule out the unlikely occurrence of a serious medical problems. Most bed wetting is perfectly normal but taking the child to a doctor will ensure that the child is developing normally.

There are several tools that can help with a child bed wetting. One of these is a bed wetting alarm to break the current sleeping habits. The cause of the bed wetting can be the child sleeping too deeply and being woken up by a bed wetting alarm will help the child to develop habits of waking up during the night to use the bathroom. When used with retention training, over time the child can be trained out of their current habits.

Its easy to question your own parenting skill sin this situation, but rest assured this is not the cause of the problem.

It is important that the children don;t go to bed with a full bladder, so excessive beverage consumption before bed tie should be avoided.

Giving children diuretic beverages like cola and coffee should be avoided, especially close to bed time. These drinks will only make the child more likely to need the bathroom in the middle of the night, adding to the problem.

Obviously bed wetting is a very emotional issue for the children as well as the parents. The child will most likely be ashamed of their bed wetting episodes and care must be taken by the parents to show kindness patience and love. Any signs of anger or impatience at this stage will further embarrass and stress the child and will be of no help with resolving the underlying problem. Encouraging the building of their self esteem and positive reenforcement will both help the child break this habit more quickly.

Medicating the child or changing their diet to help with bed wetting should not be done without direct approval of the child’s doctor. Doing either of these things can increase the child’s stress level and might have an adhere affect on the child’s bed wetting problem.
