Kids and Moving: Learning About Moving Services

Monday, December 22nd, 2008 | Uncategorized

Moving is always a challenging adventure, but when you’re relocating with kids it’s even more problematic. You must be sure to keep many items unpacked until the last moment. You must also have tons of bags and boxes with you at all times for your children. For example, you’ll need to keep a few of their favorite toys with them to make the transition much easier.

Another problem when relocating with kids is making sure that the relocation company you choose can keep to their deadline. If you’re relocating in the middle of the school year, you likely only have a few days to get everything set up once the movers. You don’t want to end up sitting in an empty home and sending your kids to school everyday wearing the same thing.

When you’re researching different choices in interstate movers, ensure that you’re asking the right questions. For example, ask them how long the relocation is going to take. But ensure to follow up by asking what the process is if for some reason it takes more time. Some companies will offer a discount if the relocation takes significantly longer than anticipated, while some don’t guarantee dates at all. Be sure you know which choice you’re dealing with.

When you’re calling the different moving services to get moving quotes, make sure you get everything in writing. Don’t focus just on the base price. Some companies will charge by the actual items that you list on your inventory. This can be a very time consuming process, as you go through your entire house and make a list of every little thing that will be moved. However, this can lead to lower overall relocating costs and can prevent you from being charged more than you anticipated at the last minute.

The other choice is to have your quote based on the square footage that you’ll actually use in their truck. This can have several benefits. First of all, you will only be charged for the exact space that you’re using. If they anticipated that you’ll need X number of square feet for your bed but you only use X-2 square feet – you will only be charged for the actual space that is taken up. It’s also much easier to get a quote as you’ll be able to estimate much better.

The key to a successful relocation with kids is to make sure that you plan ahead. Get everything in writing and make a list of all the things that you don’t want to be shipped with the moving company. This will make the transition a smooth one.
