Ever wondered how old Winnie-the-Pooh is?

Friday, January 27th, 2012 | Kids | No Comments

Our favorite bear of all lives deep within the woods and that dear friend is, Winnie-the-Pooh. This Disney character if one of the most beloved icons of Disney. There was a dispute about the actual birthday of Winnie-the-Pooh. While some feel the birthday is 1921. But that is when the author of the books, A.A. Milne, made sure a bear was given to his son, Christopher Robin, for his very first birthday. That would make Winnie-the-Pooh 91 years old this year (2012).

On the other side of the coin some folk feel that Pooh was not born until 1925, That was the time his name changed to Winnie Pooh from Edward Bear.Using those fact, Winnie is not 87 years old. A.A. The facts are settled when the author holds a conversation about it between Christopher Robin and Pooh.

Pooh is asked by Christopher Robin to please always remember him, all his life, even 100 years. Pooh says yes, but still wants to know how old that would make him by then. Christopher tells Pooh that would make him 99 years old. Sadly, Christopher Robin only lived to be 75 years old, however Pooh still kept his promise to remember him. The truth came out, Pooh will live in the hearts of children forever just like he remember Christopher Robin!

The Start of Winnie-the-Pooh

Pooh’s name was derived from two love animals that the Milne family loved. The two names came from a bear called Winnie and a Swan named Pooh that lived on a lake near by. It has never been discovered as to why the name was changed from Edward Bear to Winnie-Pooh.

The story began from a bedtime story Alan Milne would tell Christopher Robin about his Pooh bear. A publisher once asked Alan for a Christmas Eve story, Alan’s wife, Daphne, also drove him on to write the new story about Winnie-Pooh. The story was so popular it became the first chapter of the book, “Winnie-the-Pooh.”

There was another book called “When We Were Young” and it introduced all the neighbors of Pooh bear: Eeyore, the donkey, Piglet, the timid, stuttering baby pig, Kanga, the kindhearted mother kangaroo and Roo, her energetic boy. Tigger, Rabbit and Owl were created down the road, but not in the beginning stories. The world loved the idea of the teddy bear and his friends and over 150,000 copies were sold in the US alone by the end of 1926.

Next came the story “Now We Are Six” which came out in 1927 and sold 94,000 copies just the first two months. Finally the last book, in 1928, added Tigger to the group of friends, and was called “The House at Pooh Corner”.

The Reasons People Love Winnie-the-Pooh

Winnie is a true friend who is willing to help his friends in any way he can. He is always seen on his way to melancholy Eeyore’s house or one of his other friends to help them out of a dilemma. His wit may not always be the best, but he is the most caring of them all. The object lessons we have all learned from Winnie-the-Pooh over the last 90 years will go on to teach love for others to future generations.
